Potential Fields Pool Equipment (PFPE)

PFPE supports marine gravimetry and magnetometry

Marine gravimetry

PFPE supports gravimeters installed and operated on vessels in the US Academic Research Fleet.

Marine magnetics

A SeaSpy magnetometer system is available through PFPE from the WHOI-MISO facility.

Software and support

PFPE provides support to technicians on UNOLS ships, and maintains open-source code for data processing and analysis.

WHOI-MISO

The MISO facility provides instrumentation and services that complement PFPE. The two facilities collaborate on magnetometer support.

About PFPE

The Potential Fields Pool Equipment (PFPE) supports permanently installed gravimeter equipment on all University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) academic research fleet (ARF) vessels.

PFPE originated over two decades ago in response to an identified need for the UNOLS community to have a centralized repository for shipboard gravimeter systems’ technical support, and to reduce the overall gravimeter operational and support costs to the federal funding agencies.
